Background: To explore the more objective question type of the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) which is the most widely used to evaluate pain in musculoskeletal disorders, this study was performed.
Methods: Two hundred eighty five desk workers who complained musculoskeletal pain were included. They were divided into two groups; group A was explained ¡°How severe is your pain just now?¡±, and group B was explained ¡°How severe is your pain today?¡±. All subjects were completed the McGill pain questionnaire (MPQ), and they were categorized by MPQ score; mild (0¡19), moderate (20¡34), and severe (35¡73). The correlation between VAS score and MPQ score was analyzed by Pearson test. VAS scores between group A and B were compared with independent T test.
Results: There was a positive correlation between VAS score and MPQ score (R=0.322, P£¼0.05). There were significant differences in VAS scores between group A and B in severe MPQ score (P £¼0.05).
Conclusion: VAS score of group A was significantly lower than that of group B in severe MPQ score. There was a difference in VAS score according to question type, physicians need to explain VAS accurately.
